  • Sneakers are all the rage this fall

The kids are heading back to school soon and part of the process includes hitting the mall to get students classroom ready. Looking stylish and being prepared in class is all part of the experience so Ottawa At Home asked experts at St Laurent for some tips on how to prepare for back to school in stylish and sensible fashion.

What are the top three must have fashion trends this season?

Everyone, young and old, looks forward to new shoes in the fall.
All the classic sneakers are back in a big way with Converse, Vans and Keds topping many back to school wish lists.

Go to the head of the class with a hat! Toques, floppies, baseballs hats - keep covered up with the topper of your choice.

Denim is another wardrobe must have, but wear it your way! Skinnies are a classic shape but boyfriend, bootcut and high waisted, wide leg jeans will be seen all over the school yard this fall.

What are kids looking for in school bags these days?

It’s all about expressing their individuality. Bags are available in every colour of the rainbow, featuring favourite characters or the coolest patterns. Patches, pins and charms can be added to make it even more uniquely theirs.

What are some of the fun items kids want in school supplies?

Kids care about the environment so litterless lunch boxes are the way to go – everything from bags, bottles and containers of every shape and size are available at DeSerres.

Emojis have lept off our screens and can be found on bags, socks, phone cases, pens and more items at Justice.

Of course the ultimate back to school item is a new laptop or tablet from The Source.

Can you offer some tips on how to occupy younger siblings being dragged along for back to school shopping?

At St. Laurent the young kids can hop on ZAZAZOO animals and travel around the mall riding a stuffed animal! No one is happy shopping on an empty stomach - make sure to stop by the food court first to fuel up with a quick meal or an energizing smoothie. Treat the whole family to a movie at Rainbow Cinemas after a successful shopping trip!

How can I keep my kids on track in a mall full of enticing items?

Purchase a St. Laurent gift card at Guest Services and load it with exactly the amount allotted for back to school shopping. The cards are accepted at most of our 180 shops and services so kids can purchase whatever they want within the value of their card. A great lesson in budgeting!
