Walk into the brand new Flour Shoppe in the Glebe and you just can't help but smile. The cheerful purple, white and silver décor hints at an old-world elegance, while the most gorgeous cupcakes, perched prettily on pedestals, just beg to be tasted. Above it all, the seductive smell of warm sugar wafts through the air.
Melissa Somers launched a storefront version of her popular Flour Shoppe bakery after a whirlwind year of catering cupcakes for weddings, showers, anniversary parties and more.
"I have always adored baking for friends. Although I loved my previous job at the United Way, I've long envisioned a cute little shop much like this, and now it's a reality. I'm so excited," enthuses Melissa. "The Flour Shoppe is a perfect spot for little kids to nibble cupcakes with sprinkles, girlfriends to sit by the window enjoying treats and coffee, or for teens to huddle together on a date."
While cupcakes are by no means a new delight, they are currently enjoying a renaissance. "I think it's because they look so pretty, they're festive and they don't require a fork or plate to eat," explains Melissa. "When I supply them for weddings, it's great to see people enjoying them on the dance floor," she adds with a laugh. She admits that another reason cupcakes are likely so hot right now is they represent a pleasing form of portion control. "You can eat one perfect cupcake and feel satisfied, because you got to eat the whole thing."
Melissa says she and her creative assistants enjoy coming up with fantastic flavour combinations. "We love to play around, recreating foods we like, such as Beavertails or French Toast and Bacon. Our three most popular flavours so far are Double Chocolate, Vanilla Bean and Lemon Raspberry."
In addition to cupcakes baked fresh each day using all natural ingredients, the Flour Shoppe also serves up fair trade coffee from Almonte's Equator Coffee Roasters along with tea, juices and milk from Cochrane's Dairy. You can also select their delicious confections to take home and purchase cute cake plates for serving. The Flour Shoppe is at 617 Bank Street (at Strathcona). Visit
